All self-made millionaires started out just like you and I, with an ambition to be happy, successful and if all goes to plan, make some serious cash along the way. But some managed to use their drive and ambition to make tens of millions of pounds. But how? Is it all down to working harder than everyone else, with some luck thrown in?
Well, certainly hard work is involved but Thomas C. Corley also did some research on the habits of the rich. He found that certain daily habits can ‘dictate how successful or unsuccessful you will be in life.’ He notes that ‘there is a cause and effect associated with habits. Habits are the cause of wealth, poverty, happiness, sadness, stress, good relationships, bad relationships, good health, or bad health.’ He found that the self-made millions he studied shared some common daily routines, which he calls the ‘rich habits’.
Here are the ‘rich habits’ that you can easily add into your daily life:
According to Corley, 88% of the rich ‘devote thirty minutes or more each day to self-education.’ He also found that they rarely read for entertainment, they ready to ‘acquire or maintain knowledge.’ Of everything that they ready, three genres are most prevalent – Biographies of successful people, self-help and history. They chase their own goals
Most of the millionaires studied attained their wealth growing their own businesses and not by working for others. Many made money from their passions, which gave them the ‘energy, persistence, and focus needed to overcome failures, mistakes, and rejection.’
By following your own dreams and goals, you create a unique scenario where you are in total control over the accumulation of your personal wealth. Being your own boss has also proven to provide long-term happiness, compared to working for someone else. So perhaps it’s time to put your plans to run your own company in to practice? Start by making small goals that you can work on everyday.
They stay positive
Corely states that in all his research ‘positivity was a hallmark of all the self-made millionaires.’ It make sense that having an optimistic and positive outlook on life is going to make a difference in your decisions and your attitude when you come up against any problems.
Another thing he noticed is that the millionaires were all aware of their thoughts, which he notes as being a big player in their positivity. Rather than letting any negative thoughts cloud their judgement and slow them down, they are able to focus on the good, on the lessons learned and keep moving forward. ‘Awareness is the key.’
They ask for feedback
‘Fear of criticism is the reason we do not seek feedback from others,’ Corley writes. “But feedback is essential to learning what is working and what isn’t working. Feedback helps you understand if you are on the right track. Feedback criticism, good or bad, is a crucial element for learning and growth.”
It also allows you to change course and experiment with a new career or business. As Corley says, ‘Feedback provides you with the information you will need in order to succeed in any venture.’ Take time out of your busy schedule to ask for feedback from people who can give you honest and critical answers.
