How to save money – the lazy way!

Sorting out your finances is not an easy task, especially if you are trying to sort your way out of a budgeting jam. It takes time and effort and it’s, quite frankly, boring to do. Budgeting to save money needn’t be a tiresome endeavor, it can become something you do without giving it a second thought and it doesn’t need to take up any of your time; the only thing you have to do is make sure you set yourself up for an easy ride. Luckily for you we’ve taken the hard work out of that too – here’s how you can save money the lazy way:

Avoid debt!

One of the most simplest things you can do to save money is to avoid taking on debt in the first place! It sound so simple, and yes, in an ideal world we’d all be debt free and have load of cash sloshing around, but what you need to focus on is not taking on any unnecessary debt. Forget about store cards or extra credit cards and only take what you can pay back, in full, every month.

Automate your savings

This one is easy – automatically move a proportion of your money into a separate savings account as soon as you get paid every month. Make sure it’s an amount that you can afford to save as you don’t want to be dipping into your savings or taking on any debt. By having this set up you can forget about any further work in managing your savings, it’s all done for you!

Use an app

Get yourself using one of the many budgeting apps that claim to make managing your money easy. Try Toshl Finance or You Need a Budget for which help to break down your income and spending to give you some clarity on what you are spending your money on. Once you have your budget set up, all you have to do is stick to it to start saving money.

Forget the small things

Overall, not buying the odd cappuccino is not going to have a significant impact on your savings. You aren’t suddenly going to feel the impact of saving £2 here or there, but you might miss the little luxury of having a nice coffee! Instead of giving up on small things that bring you a little bit of enjoyment each day, concentrate on the big things that you can change.

Stay out of debt, keep an eye on what you are spending and don’t over-stretch yourself. Think about how you can bring in any extra money too; read our advice on ‘side hustles’ here.
